About Embroidery
Korean women are skillful in embroidery from ancient times. In the old days, a woman's virtue was judged by her needlework and a maiden with a noble birth showed her virtue and wisdom through her outstanding embroidery work.
Today, embroidery art from D.P.R Korea is much more advanced in its level and skill than the old days. Their embroidery work is set into a high value by the European and Asian world.
In Pyongyang, the capital of the D.P.R.Korea, senior schools have embroidery course and there is embroidery major in the universities with specialists teach the whole course. In the field of embroidery, the state has formed different terms to show the different levels and titles of the people who devote to this field.
The specific degrees are as follows:
1. The People's Artist (Level 17):
It is the highest degree in the field of embroidery. There are only two artists gaining this degree in the whole D.P.R.Korea.
2. The Merited Artist (Level 16):
The artists who gain this degree must have made great contributions to the embroidery developing of the country and won a number of prizes in the international exhibitions as well. Because of the strict evaluation and the high standards, the number of the merited artists in all art fields in D.P.R.Korea is rare. It's known that, the number of the merited artists is 7-8.
3. The Art Originatenator (Level 15-11):
This degree can be divided into 5 grades, from Grade 1 to Grade 5.The artists in this degree must be examined every 3 years. Grade 1 is the highest grade in this degree. The artists above the Art Originatenator degree must originate over 3 artworks each year. The works must get the permission of the National Embroidery Examine Committee. There are 40 to 50 Art Originatenator in D.P.R.Korea.
4. The Embroidery Specialist (Level 10-8):
There are 3 different grades in this degree, Grade 1,2 &3. It will be examined every 3 years. The highest is Grade 1.
5. The Embroidery Virtuoso (Level 7-2):
This degree has 6 grades. The Virtuosos from Grade 1 to Grade 3 will have a technical assessment once a year. The Virtuosos from Grade 4 to Grade 6 will have it every 2 years. The highest grade in this degree is Grade 6.
6. The Embroidery Artisan (Level 1):
This is the fundamental degree. The people who want to join the state-owned art group in embroidery must achieve this standard at least.
The above-mentioned artists must take part in the technical examination (including both theory and practice) periodically every year. According to their final scores, they will probably have the degree remained, have one-degree promotion or one-degree demotion. All will be judged by their examining results.
In the international exhibition, the number of championship from the embroidery art has reached more than a decade. When Presidents from other countries pay a visit to D.P.R Korea, embroidery works is usually used as a present to welcome the visitors.
D.P.R Korea's embroidery uses all kinds of objects like portraits, sceneries and animals as its models. The real objects are vividly transcribed on the embroideries by using different techniques.
Among all kinds of techniques, D.P.R Korea's embroidery posses an unique technique which is used to vividly show a bird's feather as if it's breathing and you would feel its softness, motion and warmth. Portrait embroidery by using the techniques of shaping and emotional expression puts the embroidery value to the utmost.
One work from the 16-18th century collects the most praises from the European class. Just as some European President says:
--If the artist himself was alive, he would be amazed at his work. --
While the embroidery is gaining ever high popularity and touching people's heart, a successful work is rare to produce. Just like even though almost every woman of D.P.R Korea knows how to embroider, there are only some of them enjoy the fame as People’s Artists or Merited Artists of embroidery.
Among the countries of this world, Only D.P.R Korea's embroidery is regarded as ART. Embroidery from other nations is no more than handicraft.
A embroidery work (length and width by 100CM) done by one person needs about 1800-2000 hours to complete.
No wonder an embroidery work needs a person's every effort into it!
